How Often Should You Service Your Car in Australia?

Published 12 March 2026 · Hitech Auto Services

One of the most common questions we hear at our Sydney workshop is simply: how often should I actually service my car? The honest answer is that it depends on your vehicle, how you drive, and what your manufacturer recommends — but there are some reliable rules of thumb.

The general rule: every 10,000–15,000 km or 12 months

Most modern cars are designed to be serviced every 10,000 to 15,000 kilometres, or every 12 months — whichever comes first. Even if you don’t clock up many kilometres, time matters: oil degrades, fluids absorb moisture, and rubber components age regardless of how far you drive.

Your owner’s manual or log book is the final word here. It sets out the manufacturer’s exact schedule, including which items are checked or replaced at each interval.

Minor vs major services

Not every service is the same. A minor service typically covers the essentials — oil and filter change, fluid top-ups, brake adjustment and a multi-point inspection. A major service adds bigger-ticket items like spark plugs, additional filters, engine tuning and a full diagnostic scan.

Alternating between minor and major services across the year keeps costs manageable while making sure nothing gets missed.

Why sticking to the schedule pays off

  • Protects your warranty. Servicing on schedule (with quality parts) keeps your new car statutory warranty valid.
  • Saves money long-term. Small issues get caught before they turn into expensive repairs.
  • Keeps you safe. Brakes, tyres and steering are checked every visit.
  • Holds resale value. A complete, stamped service history is worth real money at sale time.

A myth worth busting

You do not have to return to the dealership to keep your warranty. Under Australian Consumer Law, any licensed workshop can service your new car to the log book schedule without affecting your statutory warranty. That means you can choose a local, trusted workshop — and often save a good deal in the process.
