There’s nothing worse than a car air conditioner that wheezes out warm air on a hot Sydney day. The good news is that the warning signs usually appear well before the system fails completely. Here’s what to watch for.
1. It blows warm air with the dial on cold
The most obvious sign. If cold is selected but the vents are pushing out room-temperature (or warm) air, the system is likely low on refrigerant or has a leak.
2. The air isn’t as cold as it used to be
Air conditioning systems naturally lose over 10% of their gas every year through hoses, O-rings and seals. A gradual decline in cooling power is normal — and a clear signal it’s time for a re-gas.
3. It randomly blows colder than you set it
Inconsistent temperatures can point to a failing compressor, a faulty sensor or a control fault that’s worth diagnosing early.
4. Loud or unusual noises
Rattles, squeals or grinding when you switch the AC on can indicate a worn compressor or a failing bearing. Catching this early can save a costly replacement.
5. A musty or mouldy smell
That damp, gym-bag smell comes from bacteria and mould growing on a moist evaporator — often after the system has sat unused over winter. An anti-bacterial clean and a new pollen filter clears it at the source.
6. Foggy windscreen that won’t clear
A clogged or aged pollen filter reduces airflow and lets the cabin mist up in cooler months. Replacing it restores clear, filtered air.
7. You haven’t serviced it in over 12 months
Even with no obvious symptoms, we recommend an air conditioning service every 12 months. Running the system year-round and topping up the gas keeps seals lubricated and prevents leaks before they start.
Don’t wait for a heatwave
The busiest time for air con repairs is the first hot week of summer. Booking a service in the cooler months means no queues — and guaranteed cold air when you need it.
