If your car is more than a few years old, you’ll need a pink slip before you can renew your registration in NSW. Here’s everything you need to know, without the jargon.
What is a pink slip?
A pink slip is a safety inspection report that proves your car is roadworthy. In NSW, all vehicles more than 3 years old require this safety inspection as a condition of registration renewal.
Pink slip vs e-safety check vs white slip
These terms cause a lot of confusion, so let’s clear it up:
- Pink slip / e-Safety Check — the same thing. An “e-safety check” is simply a pink slip submitted to the RTA electronically, which lets you renew your rego online or by phone.
- White slip — an inspection rejection report. If your car doesn’t pass, you’ll get a white slip listing the repairs needed before it can be registered.
What’s checked in a safety inspection?
Our safety inspection covers the components that keep you safe on the road, including:
- Suspension & steering
- Braking system
- Front & rear tyres
- Visible fluid leaks
- Cooling system, radiator hoses and fan belts
- Front & rear lights
- Seat belts, horn and windscreen wipers
Why it matters
Driving an unregistered vehicle is a serious offence. It carries an on-the-spot fine of $1,007 plus 4 demerit points, and court penalties can reach $2,200 for unregistered driving and $5,500 for driving uninsured. A quick, affordable inspection is well worth avoiding all of that.
How long does it take?
Most inspections take around 30–45 minutes. If your car passes, the result is lodged electronically and you’re ready to renew. If it doesn’t, we can carry out the required repairs and re-inspect.
